| What is a Copyright ?
Copyright is a legal protection for the creator or "author" of a creative work. This protection allows the creator to control how the work is used and by whom. These rights include:
■ Reproduction of Rights : The right to make copies of the protected work
■ Distribution of Rights : The right to sell or otherwise distribute copies of the work
■ Derivative of Rights : The right to alter the work or create a new work based on original
■ Display of Rights : The right to perform or otherwise display the work
A copyrighted work may not be reproduced, copied, distributed or displayed without the consent of the author or person who owns the copyright. Copyright protection last for the life of the author plus seventy years.
Which Works Are Protected by Copyright ?
Copy Right Protects "original works of authorship" that are Fixed in "A tangible Form Of Expression." The fixed form does not have to be directly perceptible so long as it can be communicated with the aid of a machine or other device. Copyrightable works fall into the following categories:
Literary works (which includes computer software);
Musical works, including any accompanying words;
Dramatic works, including any accompanying music
Pantomimes and choreographic works;
Pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works;
Motion pictures and other audiovisual works;
Sound recordings; and
Architectural works.
Copyright Protection
Under the copyright, you get a copyright to your work automatically once you have "fixed" your original work in a "Tangible Medium Of Expression." You must have independently created the work and not adapted it from something else. The work must also be placed in a sufficiently permanent medium so others can reproduce, view or communicate it.
